With me it's more that I've adopted a privacy lifestyle. What I buy, however mundane or breathtakingly depraved, isn't anyone else's goddamn business because I say it's not, and I am willing to exert the effort to ensure this, to the satisfaction of my comfort level.

Every person has a different comfort level when it comes to hus own privacy, but every person has one. Mine just requires a little more care and feeding than others.

I suppose if you are purchasing lots of trashy movies and books you may want to retain your anonymity. ;)

Oh, but I can. Most of my disposable income goes to books and movies, so I completely understand the appeal. I simply weighed the benefits of rewards programs against retaining anonymity with respect to my purchase data, and chose to keep my data private. I take no issue with someone else making the same evaluation and coming to a different, personal conclusion.

I don't know, Anthony. I love my Discover card. I throw absolutely everything on there and then they give me cash back. This past year I accumulated $500 in free money just for using the card. I usually take that in the form of Borders $25 gift cards (cause the shipping is free if you spend $25), which results in a whole bunch of books and movies I wouldn't have had if I'd used cash. Can't say no to that.

I happily concede your point, although I would counter that getting mugged would suck pretty bad irrespective of whether one lost cash vs. cards. Ask Bruce Wayne.

Well, I have to stick in one negative of cash that you missed - transferrability has a downside, in that you can get mugged.

Compare for a moment how long theft of credit card information has been a problem, (maybe 30 years, maybe) against how long theft of cash has been a problem (recorded human history). You can cancel your credit cards, but that saucy Benjamin Franklin is willing to live it up around town with anyone, and won't take your calls to come home.

President Franklin though won't jack up your interest rates if you forget to pay him for 20 days. He also won't screw your credit report, send you junk mail, or ask you to complete a "customer satisfaction survey". Our beloved dead presidents are also willing to work with everyone (those under 18 included, those with poor credit included)
